Several studies suggest that the $1.4 billion in government subsidies are encouraging the ethanol program without substantial benefits to the U.S. economy. Large ethanol industries and a few U.S. government agencies, such as the USDA, support the production of ethanol. Corn-farmers receive minimal profits. In the U.S. ethanol system, considerably more energy, including high-grade fossil fuel, is required to produce ethanol than is available in the energy-ethanol output. Specifically about 29% more energy is used to produce a gallon of ethanol than the energy in a gallon of ethanol. Fossil energy powers corn production and the fermentation/distillation processes. Increasing subsidized ethanol production will take more feed from livestock production, and is estimated to currently cost consumers an additional $1 billion per year. Ethanol production increases environmental degradation. Corn production causes more total soil erosion than any other crop. Also, corn production uses more insecticides, herbicides, and nitrogen fertilizers than any other crop. All these factors degrade the agricultural and natural environment and contribute to water pollution and air pollution. Increasing the cost of food and diverting human food resources to the costly inefficient production of ethanol fuel raise major ethical questions. These occur at a time when more than half of the world's population is malnourished. The ethical priority for corn and other food crops should be for food and feed. Subsidized ethanol produced from U.S. corn is not a renewable energy source. 相似文献
ABSTRACT. This article explores the regional identity of the Great Plains through its foodways using 744 responses from a mailed survey that asked participants to plan a representative menu for their locale. The strongest association is with beef—not surprising in an area known for cattle ranching. Other commonalities include potatoes, beans, and corn. Differentiation within the region is marked by preparation methods for beef as well as emphases on cornbread and peach cobbler in the south, rhubarb pie in the north, tortillas and sopapillas in the southwest, and pickles in two separate clusterings. 相似文献
Individual based simulations of population dynamics require the availability of growth models with adequate complexity. For this purpose a simple-to-use model (non-linear multiple regression approach) is presented describing somatic growth and reproduction of Daphnia as a function of time, temperature and food quantity. The model showed a good agreement with published observations of somatic growth (r2 = 0.954, n = 88) and egg production (r2 = 0.898, n = 35). Temperature is the main determinant of initial somatic growth and food concentration is the main determinant of maximal body length and clutch size. An individual based simulation was used to demonstrate the simultaneous effects of food and temperature on the population level. Evidently, both temperature and food supply affected the population growth rate but at food concentrations above approximately 0.4 mg Cl−1Scenedesmus acutus temperature appeared as the main determinant of population growth.
Four simulation examples are given to show the wide applicability of the model: (1) analysis of the correlation between population birth rate and somatic growth rate, (2) contribution of egg development time and delayed somatic growth to temperature-effects on population growth, (3) comparison of population birth rate in simulations with constant vs. decreasing size at maturity with declining food concentrations and (4) costs of diel vertical migration. Due to its plausible behaviour over a broad range of temperature (2–20 °C) and food conditions (0.1–4 mg Cl−1) the model can be used as a module for more detailed simulations of Daphnia population dynamics under realistic environmental conditions. 相似文献
The Malpica–Tui complex (NW Iberian Massif) consists of a Lower Continental Unit of variably deformed and recrystallized granitoids, metasediments and sparse metabasites, overridden by an upper unit with rocks of oceanic affinities. Metamorphic minerals dated by the 40Ar/39Ar method record a coherent temporal history of progressive deformation during Variscan metamorphism and exhumation. The earliest stages of deformation (D1) under high-pressure conditions are recorded in phengitic white micas from eclogite-facies rocks at 365–370 Ma. Following this eclogite-facies peak-metamorphism, the continental slab became attached to the overriding plate at deep-crustal levels at ca. 340–350 Ma (D2). Exhumation was accompanied by pervasive deformation (D3) within the continental slab at ca. 330 Ma and major deformation (D4) in the underlying para-autochthon at 315–325 Ma. Final tectonothermal evolution included late folding, localized shearing and granitic intrusions at 280–310 Ma.
Dating of high-pressure rocks by the 40Ar/39Ar method yields ages that are synchronous with published Rb–Sr and Sm–Nd ages obtained for both the Malpica–Tui complex and its correlative, the Champtoceaux complex in the French Armorican Massif. The results indicate that phengitic white mica retains its radiogenic argon despite been subjected to relatively high temperatures (500–600 °C) for a period of 20–30 My corresponding to the time-span from the static, eclogite-facies M1 peak-metamorphism through D1-M2 eclogite-facies deformation to amphibolite-facies D2-M3. Our study provides additional evidence that under certain geological conditions (i.e., strain partitioning, fluid deficiency) argon isotope mobility is limited at high temperatures, and that 40Ar/39Ar geochronology can be a reliable method for dating high pressure metamorphism. 相似文献
With the development of computer graphics, the three-dimensional (3D) visualization brings new technological revolution to the traditional cartography. Therefore, the topographic 3D-map emerges to adapt to this technological revolution, and the applications of topographic 3D-map are spread rapidly to other relevant fields due to its incomparable advantage. The researches on digital map and the construction of map database offer strong technical support and abundant data source for this new technology, so the research and development of topographic 3D-map will receive greater concern. The basic data of the topographic 3D-map are rooted mainly in digital map and its basic model is derived from digital elevation model (DEM) and 3D-models of other DEM-based geographic features. In view of the potential enormous data and the complexity of geographic features, the dynamic representation of geographic information becomes the focus of the research of topographic 3D-map and also the prerequisite condition of 3D query and analysis. In addition to the equipment of hardware that are restraining, to a certain extent, the 3D representation, the data organization structure of geographic information will be the core problem of research on 3D-map. Level of detail (LOD). space partitioning, dynamic object loading (DOL) and object culling are core technologies of the dynamic 3D representation. The objectselection, attribute-query and model-editing are important functions and interaction tools for users with 3D-maps provided by topographic 3D-map system, all of which are based on the data structure of the 3D-model. This paper discusses the basic theories, concepts and cardinal principles of topographic 3I)-map,expounds the basic way to organize the scene hierarchy of topographic 3D-map based on the node mechanism and studies the dynamic representation technologies of topographic 3D-map based on LOD, space partitioning, DOL and object culling. Moreover. such interactive operation functions are explored, in this paper, as spatial query, scene editing and management of topographic 3D-map. Finally, this paper describes briefly the applications of topographic 3D-map in its related fields. 相似文献
The varve data-set from a freeze-core taken in the deepest part of Baldeggersee was subjected to different multivariate statistical
analyses in order to estimate the amount of variance in the varve thickness measures explicable by past climate and by the
trophic state of the lake. A comparison of two different time-periods (1902 to1992 versus 1920 to 1980) revealed that the
lake restoration programme since 1982 has had a significant impact on the formation of the seasonal layers. Results of the
partitioning of the variance in the varve thickness measures showed that about two thirds of the variance are unexplained
by a climate and trophic state model and that trophic state explains 6%, whereas climate accounts for about 28% of the variance
before the effect of lake restoration had a strong impact on the varves. Among the climate parameters the amount of annual
precipitation is a strong predictor for explaining the thickness of both dark layer and total couplet thickness, whereas summer
precipitation is important for the thickness of the light layer. 相似文献
Inclusions of ferropericlase and former (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O3 perovskite in diamonds from Kankan, Guinea believed to originate in the lower mantle were studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy to determine Fe3+/ΣFe. Fe3+ concentration in the (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O3 inclusion is consistent with empirical relations relating Fe3+/ΣFe to Al concentration, supporting the inference that it crystallised in the perovskite structure at lower mantle conditions. In ferropericlase there is a nearly linear variation of trivalent cation abundance with monovalent cation abundance, suggesting a substitution of the form Na0.5M0.53+O (M=Fe3+, Cr3+, Al3+). Excess positive charge is likely balanced by cation vacancies, where their abundance is observed to increase with increasing iron concentration, consistent with high-pressure experiments. The abundance of cation vacancies is related to oxygen fugacity, where ferropericlase inclusions from Kankan and São Luiz (Brazil) are inferred to have formed at conditions more oxidising than Fe-(Mg,Fe)O equilibrium, but more reducing than Re-ReO2 equilibrium. Fe2+/Mg partition coefficients between (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O3 and ferropericlase were calculated for inclusions co-existing in the same diamond using Mössbauer data and empirical relations based on high-pressure experimental work. Most values are consistent with high-pressure experiments, suggesting that these inclusions equilibrated at lower mantle conditions. The measured ferropericlase Fe3+ concentrations are consistent with diamond formation in a region of redox gradients, possibly arising from the subduction of oxidised material into reduced lower mantle. Reduction of carbonate to form ferropericlase and diamond is consistent with a slight shift of Kankan δ13C values to isotopically heavy compositions compared to the worldwide dataset, and could supply the oxygen necessary to satisfy the high Fe3+ concentration in (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O3 perovskite, as well as account for the high proportion of ferropericlase in the lower mantle paragenesis. The heterogeneity of lower mantle diamond sources indicates that the composition of lower mantle diamonds do not necessarily reflect those of the bulk mantle. 相似文献
